Be One With The Iron
One year ago, I stood triumphant over the broken corpse of Arthas Menethil, the
Lich King.
One month ago, I looked directly into the eyes of Deathwing
and punched that dragon in the face.
One day ago, I heard the cry of a
lone murloc and nearly soiled my iron pants.

5-19-2013 My Iron Progress: Death in Duskwood

I am Forego, a rogue of integrity..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Wolf mangled body has been found in Duskwood. How ironic that a worgen has to die like that.
Back to the beginning with a heavy sigh...
The secret council has chosen another...one who has yet to fulfill her destiny.
Forego.
A YEAR OF IRON
It began as an idea, borrowed from old school gaming. Diablo 2 Hardmode.
Die and have to restart from the beginning. No Save points. A challenge for the hardcore, the insane, the stupid.
It began to take form in the EU community, where often gaming IS
hardcore. After much discussion and how to apply hardcore to Wow, a set of rules
emerged. Someone in the US got wind of the Challenge and it migrated to the US
Forums. In November of 2011, a forum thread was started. (By Sandinhiseye)
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3595375172 with many Naysayers.. “Can’t be done”
“I'm not willing to endure the endless stream of "U suck," "l2ply," comments that would come from trying this challenge.”
“For anyone decent at the game, this isn't really a challenge so much as a shot in the
foot.”
But…we began to see people starting: Ironbelle “This is my girl
:).. she is on Baelgun with her trusting Canine Challenger”
Ironmaidon “Log me Im goona gidderdun =D” and“Ironpikklez on the Earthern
Ring server”
And Players found that it was Good :
“I’ve hit level 22. The Ultimate questers challenge. Not for the casual minded.” Greyiron, dwarf rogue.
And the first Death Rages : “Say goodbye to this brave paladin
who tried to conquer Azeroth under difficult circumstances at the young lvl of
just 14 to a mob who ran from him..this mob ran fast very fast right into the
middle of a bunch of caster mobs who brought his end quick and painlessly, may
the next character I roll in this event not suffer at such an early age..IronmaiÐon signing out and
deleted.”
In February 2012 this website was created. We also had Ironbraids create our first spreadsheet/tracker. It was a voluntary sheet, where you updated your progress and/or death, with a reason for your death. Many hacks later..Casa appeared as tracker savior…and that part is History.
Many arguments and controversy abounded. We all recall when Neverdied appeared on the Forum to stir up ire…caused many valiant Iron Soldiers to disappear, including Ironbraids..Our own Forums grew out of the
need for a place to call our own, many bows to the great Ironlord, and to the ever spirit Ironmikey, who moved much of the lore to the new forums..
The Iron Community got the attention of the Blizzard community
managers, who posted an article.http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/4452527/Till_Death_Do_You_Part-2_10_2012#blog
The great influx of people trying the challenge
was staggering, creating some guild havoc and much dismay. Level one guilds were
allowed, more for comfort of chat than anything else. We saw the Ironman
Challenge guild and who can forget Too Cute to Die? Ironman chat channels were
created, so at least you were not alone..Chats were a noisy affair in those
days, when everyone thought it was easy and they would be the first to 85. But
by and by, they fell by the wayside, thinking the challenge was some sort of
race to a grand finish. When Kripparian scored the first 85, many pseudo Ironmen
disappeared. (Even Kripp died on his first Iron toon…) They did not have the
fortitude to carry on…
We remember the names: Ironbraids, Ironmikey, Casafour, Ebmoria,
Selenagomez, Ironlord, Rustyiron, Kahdrii, Janileth, Ironstephen, Ironmin,
Ironaria, the Ironbellies, Ironpossible and Possibleiron, Bratdefertwo, Ironmack,
Lapop, Hemeferrous….
Today, we are left with a hardy remnant of soldiers, and we have
seen 13 reach 85 (pre MOP), which to the surprise of many, were not all hunters.
Druids, a priest, hunters, a mage, and a warlock are amongst the soldiers who have topped the
first crest. Our priest, Lyssan, has now reached 90. Who will be next? Who dares
to take the challenge?
THE IRONMAN CHALLENGE...
DEATH IS PERMANENT. PERIOD.
Attempt the WoW Ironman Challenge. Go ahead and try. Use it as a training tool, a guild event, or just for fun. There is no reward but the fact you accomplished something. Set a personal goal and strive for it. The Ironman Community is behind you 100%, and will support your adventure. Some servers have Ironman Guilds, that must stay at level 1, and reform if they level. Wyrmrest Accord (US) is popular for Alliance players, there is an Ironman chat channel #6 for company,(plus a couple of Ironman guilds), Earthen Ring (EU) is a popular Ironman server also. For Horde players, try Moonguard, where there is a chat channel Ironmanchallenge #5, and a guild Cult of Iron. But you can level on ANY server, and if you are brave enough, try a PvP server...On Icecrown, the mage known as Strazii has an Ironman guild going, pst him there. Many servers have an ironman chat channel...
There is a tracker board, which keeps a tally of Ironmen, the servers they are on, their level, and a list of Honored Dead, for when they pass into the light. *see Roll Call page for link*. You do NOT have to use it, but it helps the community cheer your progress on.
Remember, that Death is Permanent to an Ironman, but use it as a lesson for the life of the next charcter, whether Iron or not. It can be a training tool to make you a better player.
